PLANO - The Plano three-headed monster and its mentor were each rewarded with top district honors on the All-District 8-5A Boys Basketball Team, as released recently by coaches in the alignment.
John Roberson, a Florida transfer who has played in three state semifinals and two state championships in three high school seasons, was named the Most Valuable Player. The point guard led Plano to the District 8-5A and Region I championships and ultimately to the first state championship won by a Collin County or Plano ISD boys basketball team. He was also the Class 5A state tournament MVP.
Roberson recorded the first triple-double on record at Plano, but succeeded by utilizing his teammates.
Eric Zastoupil, an Army commitment, was rewarded with Defensive Player of the Year honors. He crashed the glass and played physical at the post, while also averaging 14.5 points.
Joe Fulce, a Texas A&M signee, was a first-team selection. He averaged 9.2 rebounds, nearly enough to average a double-double. If a Region I tournament MVP award were awarded, he would have received it for scoring a double-double in one half of the regional final.
Fulce and Zastoupil were each three-year starters for Plano, which had its starting point guard transfer out and then Roberson transfer in.
Tom Inman was rewarded with District 8-5A Coach of the Year honors. The past five District championships have been won by a Plano ISD coach and each Plano ISD school has at least one title during that stretch.
Craig Stanley, the player which nearly single-handedly rallied Plano West past Duncanville in a bi-district playoff game, was also selected to the first team.
Jerrald Bonham and Sterling Melville, both of Plano West were second-team selections. Kola Alade, Kevin Smith and John West, all of Plano East, were also second-team selections.
